unite to light

We chose to support Unite to Light because they make an important contribution to the expansion of renewable energy and the minimization of air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, while helping people in crisis regions.

Unite to Light is a non-profit organization based in Santa Barbara, California that is dedicated to providing low-cost solar light and power to those without electricity across the globe. One billion people are currently living without electricity. These people very often make use of kerosene lamps, which emit highly toxic, noxious gases, which in turn lead to illness among users. Unite to Light's portable lamps that use solar energy are an ecological and health-preserving alternative. Apart from detrimental effects on health and environement, the lack of light in the evening and at night has dramatic consequences for the lives of the people affected.

Children who live in households without electricity have no opportunity to do homework, read or study in the evening. In the projects supported by Unite to Light, up to 30 % of the children have been able to obtain a higher school qualification through the access to light.

In regions hit by environmental disasters such as hurricanes, floods, fires, Unite to Light and their partner Direct Relief, could provide solar lamps to hospitals, midwives and people affected by the disaster.

In countries like Bangladesh, Haiti and Uganda, Unite to Light distributes solar lights and chargers to midwives and community health workers. This gives them the important opportunity to work at night.
